What are film stocks?
Film stocks are specialized types of photographic film designed for capturing images in analog cameras. Each film stock is formulated with a unique combination of light-sensitive chemicals that determine its performance characteristics, such as color rendition, contrast, grain structure, and dynamic range.
At its heart, film stock is the particular type of film you use in your camera to capture images. These attributes can significantly impact the overall look and feel of your photos, making a big difference in the aesthetic you choose for your wedding day. Here are four of my top film stocks that I consider essential for this wedding season. Each one brings its own special quality, ensuring that every moment is captured with the perfect touch.
Film photography has become so popular over the past couple of years within the wedding community, I started shooting film 10 years ago as a hobby starting with a completely manual film camera ✨it took some time to get used to✨
Trying and testing so many different films I've decided on my top four for not just wedding photography but for couples who love 35mm film too.
So I'm spilling the tea on which ones I would choose for any wedding day ☕️

Kodak Portra 400
I’ll admit I was hesitant to purchase Kodak Portra 400 for the longest time. The price tag is a little ✨ intense ✨. Kodak Portra 400 has quickly become one of my film stocks of choice, and for good reason. It’s not just a popular choice among photographers; it’s a game-changer, offering versatility and reliability in a way that few others can match.
Kodak Portra 400 is more than just a well-loved film; it's a powerhouse that shines in various shooting conditions. Its reputation is well-earned, making it a staple in my kit;
Pros of Kodak Portra 400

Cons of Kodak Portra 400
- Price Point: The most obvious drawback is the cost. Kodak Portra 400 is priced higher than many other film stocks, which can be a significant consideration, especially for those on a tight budget.
- Availability: Depending on where you are, finding Portra 400 can be a bit of a challenge. While it’s widely available, it’s not always in stock everywhere, which can be frustrating when you need it for an upcoming shoot.
- Color Accuracy Variations: Although Portra 400 is known for its color accuracy, some users may notice slight variations in color rendition between different batches. This minor inconsistency can occasionally affect the uniformity of your results.

Cons of Kodak UltraMax 400
